Will You Participate In Earth Hour?

A while back I posted a blog about the very much hyped Earth Hour, which you can read about here.

This is just a friendly reminder that it is happening tonight, from 8:30pm-9:30pm.

So, will you participate? Why or why not?

  1. I did not participate. But I have a couple of controversial thoughts on why I did not. The first being did it make a noticeable difference? Did they provide any national news coverage on it? Outside of the national monuments that took place in this event, nothing was said about individuals. And it is not about them providing news coverage, but about them getting exposure for their countries and events for tourism and travel reasons. Of course, all that boils back down to the economy and this "recession" we are in. And on a side note, we started this recession. It is your fault, her fault, my fault that we are in the position we are in.

Another reason I did not participate in this is because its all a big game. It is a fad. It is a ridiculous fad that is getting played out so much that I am sick of seeing it. I will forget to mention that I am doing a corporate identity to a lawn mowing service called, "Going Green Lawncare". I actually chose the name. I chose the name for this said reason. Because it is a fad, people will flock to it, and he will make money because he uses this ploy and technique to gain a customer base. And it is complete bull shit.

I am sorry if I seem a little harsh here. But I am just sick and tired of seeing all the commercials, signs, and bumper stickers talking about going green. If you want to go green great, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I am not going with you. I ask for paper when I am at the grocery because they are better made, have handles, and keep my milk cold longer. I use the lights in my apartment because I am fortunate enough to have them. It is a luxury of living in this country. I use my car because I am not going to walk in the rain, snow, sleet, hail, or whatever else this Indiana weather can throw us, to the corner to get groceries.

All I am saying is this is a fad that I want to go away sooner than later. But I did not participate in Earth Day or whatever it is called. Am I am bad person because of it? No, I am just not a lemming.

  2. I will confess. I did not participate either. For different reasons, but still all boils down to that "fad" you speak of.

I was watching Lost during Earth Hour. Yes, I know, Lost doesn't screen on Saturday evenings, but I'm catching up and am at the end of the 3rd season. By the way, that is an amazing show! I am fortunate enough to have a girlfriend who owns all of the seasons. This, to me, was a bit more important than Earth Hour.

I totally respect the efforts and awareness that this event represents, but I also don't think it will make a difference because right when that hour is up, what do you think happens? Everyone turns on their electricity again all at once, maybe even creating some power spike that uses up just as much energy to power on those appliances all at once. I'm not an energy expert though.

At first, I only became interested in this because of the wonderful graphic designer by the name of Shepard Fairey. You may know his as the man behind Obama's HOPE poster that had a big influence on him becoming elected. I won't get into that though. Then, I became interested in other's thoughts on the matter and it is fun hearing what people have to say. I just wish more people responded.

Thanks for being a team player, Ricky!
